Michael’s early years were anything but smooth sailing. Raised in a challenging home environment, he sought refuge in a local church, where he found guidance and hope. Inspired to become a pastor, he pursued theological studies for a year. But fate had other plans. Drawn by the allure of the sea, Michael eventually set his course for South Florida, where he discovered his passion for fishing. However; Michael kept his faith strong through bible studies on the sea and remained faithful to ministry through his entire life.
With his wife, Wendy, by his side and three children to support, Michael built a reputation for selecting the finest catches from each trip and delivering fresh, high-quality seafood to top dining establishments. In 1987, armed with a box truck and an unyielding passion for quality, he began selling seafood quickly building a loyal customer base. By 1993, Floribbean had grown into a full-scale processing facility, supplying customers nationwide.
Passing the Torch
The sea may be relentless, but so is the family’s dedication to preserving Michael’s legacy. In 2021, after Michael passed away from cancer, his son, Jonathan Black, took the helm. Driven by a desire to honor his father’s memory, Jon expanded the business and launched a line of fish dips in 2024 under Captain Black’s name.
Starting with fish dips in November 2024, Captain Black’s quickly expanded its offerings to include hot smoked fish, frozen fin fish, skin packs, cold smoked fish, and dry scallops. Each product reflects Michael’s passion for quality and the family’s unwavering commitment to sustainable and ethical seafood sourcing.
